Nan had gotten pregnant as a nineteen-year-old and was forced to go to a convent to give birth. Nan was devastated when they gave away her baby, and she believed that Agatha and Archie's daughter, Teddy, was the one taken from her. That is why she seduced Archie, to be close to her daughter.
Nan's trip to the hotel was not all that random either. The newled couple, the Marstens, were Sister Mary Claire and Father Joseph from the convent. They renounced their vows to marry. Bess killed Father Joseph for raping her, and Nan killed Sister Mary Claire because of her hand in Nan losing her baby.
Agatha eventually told Nan that Teddy was adopted. Was that so that Nan would always take care of Teddy, or was Teddy really adopted? That is up to the reader to decide.
Agatha (in the book) ended up having an affair with Detective Chilton.
