SPOILERS for Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

This post contains spoilers; proceed with caution.

What a wild ride!

This book has alternating timelines. In one timeline, Natalie is telling her story, her childhood, meeting Caleb, and how they came to be on Yesteryear ranch. The other timeline was the same ranch in the 1800s.

The real twist is that Natalie had attacked Producer Shannon when she found out that she had slept with Caleb. Producer Shannon said it was a sexual attack and exposed the truth about Yesteryear. 20+ employees, two nannies, and a complete sham. Natalie had a sort of breakdown and decided they were going to live like she had projected to her millions of followers. They were going to live like they were in the 1800's.

Mary, the one holding the family together, was the child that Natalie was pregnant with when they went off the grid. Clementine had come and removed all of the other children from their custody, but that is okay, because Natalie and Caleb made more.

Natalie was having some sort of psychosis where she forgot that she chose that life and that there was an outside world. Until Clementine returned to Yesteryear yet again, to take custody of the children.

The book ends with Natalie, in shackles, serving a thirty-year prison term for child abuse. She has returned to Yesteryear to be interviewed on the eve of the publication of Mary's tell-all book.

This book wasn't what I expected at all. There is a deep level of social commentary that will be dissected for years to come.
