Such a sweet novel. Frederick ended up coming clean with the nursing home because it was the only way to get Hannah the money she desperately needed. Bernard was a gambler. And every time he won big, he socked the winnings away for Hanna. But the money was only available after his death. So Frederick had to make sure the world knew that Bernard was dead.
He ended up going to Bernard's funeral and made nice with Hannah.
