Birdie went to Oxford hoping to ask her sister's husband for money to save the family home down in the delta. Instead, Birdie learned that her sister's husband had lost all the Tartt money, and the Tartt family home was at risk of foreclosure.
When a woman showed up at Idlewilde looking for a job, Birdie soon realized that it was Charlie LeFluer, Meg's mom. She had been deemed "feebleminded" and was sent to a state home and sterilized to prevent her from having any more children. Charlie convinced Birdie that the only way for them to make the money they both needed was to open a brothel. So they opened The Calamity Club.
Meg's father was Welty Pittman, the doctor, and the husband of Garnett Pittman, the evil woman who ran the orphanage.
Dr. Pittman was the man in the boxy car who kept showing up at Idlewilde and parked. He finally came to the house to tell Charlie that Tom Heidelberg had died; he had told the Heidelbergs that Birdie would retrieve Meg. Instead, Garnett found out and was going to go get Meg herself. Dr. Pittman stepped in to put a stop to it, shocked by how bad the little office where his daughter had been forced to work was.
It was Charlie who showed up to bring Meg home, much to her shock.
