SPOILERS for The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain

Henry Kraft was having a long-term affair with the daughter of his family's maid.  Henry and Honor grew up together, but interracial marriage was illegal in North Carolina in 1944.  At first, I thought he might be gay and having an affair with Zeke, Honor's brother, but no.  He also fathered Honor's two children.

When Tess found out about the relationship, she didn't play the jilted wife, instead, she used it as leverage for a divorce.  Henry ended up faking his death in a factory fire, freeing them both to marry who they really loved.  Henry headed west after faking his death, where interracial marriage was not illegal. After enough time passed, Tess and Vincent drove Honor and their family to Henry.

They all lived happily ever after!
