SPOILERS for Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker
Lost of spoilers with this thriller!
First of all, the night the girls disappeared Emma told her mother that she was pregnant with Hunter's baby and essentially she pushed Emma down the stairs, killing her. She and Mr. Martin took her body to bury in the woods, but Cass was in Emma's car that night. She saw what they did to her sister.
Only it wasn't Emma who was pregnant with Hunter's baby, it was her. She and Emma concocted this idea for Emma, the favored child, to tell their mother she was pregnant to gauge her reaction. When Emma was killed Cass ran away to protect herself and her baby. Only she got messed up with a couple of loons who held her captive. Her whole reason for coming back was to get the real story out in the open. To expose her mother for the narcissistic murderer that she is.
With the help of her older half-brother (not Hunter) she was able to keep her daughter safe while her "reappearance" was going down. After it was all over and her mother arrested, she was able to return to her daughter and live a happy life. Or so we assume.
