SPOILERS for The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
The Owens children lost their parents in a car accident. They were in a cab trying to chase down Jet who had run off to be with her boyfriend. The cab her parents were in had hit and killed her boyfriend, Levi. She never loved again.
Franny was left to care for her younger siblings and had to break things off with her childhood best friend (and unofficial boyfriend) Hay. For decades they did the dance before finally giving in and were together without getting married, trying to trick the curse. But Hay was diagnosed with terminal cancer and they said to heck with the curse and married before his death.
Vincent discovered that he was gay, but not before fathering a child, Regina, with their third cousin. He was happy and in love with a professor. But then the Vietnam war started and Vincent was drafted. To protect him the sisters enlisted the help of Hay and snuck Vincent off to Europe, where he faked his death to live the rest of his life with the love of his life, William.
It is Regina's daughters who grew to be the sisters featured in Practical Magic. They came to their aunts after Regina was killed in a car accident.
