Paul was a complete psychopath and had been slowly poisoning Mia with arsenic so that he could be free to be with his young girlfriend and he would be in charge of Mia's wealth. He was planning on taking her to their lake cabin to finish her off without doing it in front of their children.
The big twist was that Mia had it figured out. Their neighbor at the lake was retired from the CIA and one day over gardening she laid out her story and the neighbor figured it out. They figured out Paul's plan and had their own counterplan. Forcing him to sign marriage dissolution papers. But not before beating the crap out of the neighbor and setting fire to another couple's house.
The end of the book was a true "woman power" moment. It was thrilling and exciting and perfect.
