Evie's brother, Will, was killed early on in the war. Evie and her family were devastated by his loss, but it only pushed Evie and Tom closer together. Oh, it was revealed late in the book (but hinted at several times throughout) that Will got a French nurse pregnant and left behind a daughter when he was killed. When Tom was sent to a hospital in Scotland to recover mentally from the horrors of war, it was Evie who went to be by his side. However, they seriously did not communicate their feelings to each other in a clear way.
After Evie had joined the auxiliary I had the feeling that she would be killed off before she and Tom could confess their feelings and she very nearly died when she caught the Spanish Flu. It was nearly the end of the book before you realize that Evie and Tom did get together and Evie died in November of 1968 and Tom went to Paris one last time before he was going to go be with her.
