Cass discovered a burner cell phone that belonged to her best friend, Rachel. From the burner phone, she was able to piece together that her husband and her best friend were having an affair. And they were plotting to drive Cass mad, even to the point of suicide so they could get their hands on her inheritance.
Once Cass had pieced it all together she set up Matthew to be accused as the murderer. But what she didn't realize was that it was Rachel who killed Cass's friend on the deserted road. The woman had discovered that Rachel and Matthew were having an affair and was going to tell Cass. Rachel had to stop her.
