Florence's upstairs neighbor, Adam, killed his girlfriend, Marta, months ago. She had been cheating on him with Alfie's father.
Adam took Alfie for the ransom money so he could "start over." Florence was trying to rescue Alfie when Adam started to beat the shit out of her. Jenny killed him but made it look like a suicide.
Alfie's parents give Florence a huge reward, but the book ends with the impression that Dylan and their creepy neighbor have become eco-terrorists.
