SPOILERS for Big Lies In A Small Town by Diane Chamberlain

Anna Dale was working late when Martin Drapple, the man she beat out for the chance to paint the mural, visited her at the warehouse.  He raped her and Anna killed him with a hammer. 

The young man who had been helping her found her and helped her to cover up the murder. That young man was Jesse Jameson Williams.  But then Anna found out she was pregnant and the police were asking her what happened to her hammer.   Jesse's family helped to hid Anna from the police and helped her through her pregnancy and childbirth.  Anna decided to give the baby up for adoption.

That baby was Morgan Christopher's great-grandfather.

Anna Dale had left Edenton after giving birth, moved to New York City and reinvented herself, as Judith Shipley.  Judith went on to be a famous artist and one of her works was featured in the gallery.
