Mercy Alban had died as a young child. The Alban family didn't talk about her often. But the summer of 1956 Fate went missing the same say that David Carville died.
Flash forward to today, when a crazy old lady shows up for the funeral. Grace assumes that it is Fate, but the truth is eventually revealed. It is Mercy. Mercy died all those years ago, but Grace's grandmother used some Celtic magic to raise her from the dead. But she was crazy. They hid her on the third floor. But that summer she killed Fate and tried to take her place. Grace's grandfather sent her to an insane asylum in Switzerland. A reporter broke her out of the asylum and brought her back to the states hoping to get to the bottom of his own family's connections to the Albans.
David Carville got Grace's mother pregnant before dying. She gave the baby up for adoption, the reporter.
They figured it all out and Mercy finally died, but not before wreaking havoc.
