Zadie was sleeping with Nick, but it is revealed that so was Emma. Emma's boyfriend committed suicide when he found out Emma was cheating on him. Emma has lived in fear of Zadie finding out all of these years.
In the present day, Emma loses the young daughter of a wealthy Charlotte family. The family was socially connected to Zadie and Zadie's children, so she felt her loyalties were torn. When the family decides they will stop at nothing for retribution it is Nick who steps in to get the grieving family to back off.
Zadie learns the truth about Nick and Emma but ends up forgiving Emma. Because that is what friends do.
