Rye was not killed when the helicopter went down. Frankie saw him get off the plane when all of the POWs were released. But worse, he was married. Both when they were in Vietnam and after, when he promised her they were going to get a divorce.
Frankie went off the deep in with pills and alcohol and ended up in rehab after nearly killing a man while drunk. She got sober, moved to Montana and opened a retreat for other nurses who served in the war.
She went to the dedication of the Vietnam War Memorial where Jamie Callahan found her at the wall.
The Women was her best book yet.
