Dwayne killed Ethan by accidentally pushing him down the deck stairs at the lake house. Lizzie killed Adrienne, but then staged it to it look like it was her. They set the fire to the junkyard to hide Ethan's body, but also made it look like it was Dwayne. They took off to the city, where Lizzie assumed Adrienne's life and killed Dwayne, claiming self-defense.
Lizzie got away with it, but the author hints that the state trooper pieced it all together in the end.
