Wayne Butler was on the ship, disguised as a caretaker. He was trying to get to Maria because it insulted him that she voted not guilty. But really she voted guilty but said she didn't to take the heat off of another juror. Maria lured him away from her kids and they shot Butler in the ship's staff corridor.
The book ended with Maria being solicited to help solve another mystery, setting up for a sequel.
