Sooo many spoilers to be revealed with this book.
First of all, Cecily was going to the building where her husband and best friend worked that day to sign divorce papers. She had found out that her husband, Tom, was cheating on her. It is revealed later in the book that his "emotional affair" was with Kate, Cecily's neighbor and best friend.
The whole world thought that Kate was dead, but instead, she wasn't at work that day. She was running away that day. Feeling overwhelmed with everything, she was leaving her husband and two kids. The explosion gave her the perfect cover and she let everybody think that she was dead.
Until she saw the article where Franny was being interviewed. She returned from "the dead" to prove that Franny was a fraud. She was unable to prove that Franny was a fraud, but she did get Franny on tape confessing to causing the explosion.
The very last secret revealed was that Franny was Kate's daughter. She was studying abroad when she got pregnant, gave birth, and put the baby up for adoption without anybody ever knowing.
