Tom and Brigid had an affair before Karen came in the picture. Karen faked her death and ran from a husband in Las Vegas. She had set the scene that she had run from an abusive husband, but really he was a money launderer. She stole two million dollars of his money and ran away. She found Tom, who she loved. But when the old husband found her, she DID kill him.
But, Brigid had followed Karen that night that she ran out of the house. Brigid saw Karen kill him. Brigid saw Karen drop the gun. Brigid then planted the gun back at the Krupp house. If Karen goes to prison for murder than that frees Tom up for Brigid.
Instead, the police cannot prove that it was Karen who killed the man in the diner. So nobody will go to jail for his death.
Oh and crazy Brigid is pregnant with Tom's baby after she blackmailed him into sleeping with her.
