Rebecca de Winter was a horrible woman. Max killed her. He sunk her sail boat to hide her body. When the body of a woman washed up miles away he identified her as Rebecca to be done with it.
The day after their ball a ship ran aground exposing the sunk sailboat and Rebecca's body. It was ruled a suicide, but a cousin (and former tryst) of Rebecca's demanded that they look at it as a homicide. That road led them to the fact that Rebecca had cancer and was not likely to live much longer.
As Max and his wife arrive back at Manderley in the early hours of the morning they find Manderley is burning to the ground. Set on fire by Mrs. Danvers who had an inappropriate relationship with Rebecca.
