First of all - the reason why Alex faked the invitations to both Laura and Casey was that Casey was sick. She has ALS and Alex wanted the girls to come to terms before it was too late.
Laura ran away all those years ago because she overheard a conversation between her boyfriend and Alex and she misinterpreted it to be that they slept together, in reality, Alex knew about the ALS gene and didn't want to tell Laura because Laura wouldn't be able to keep the secret from Casey.
Finally, Laura and Casey ended up being half-sisters. They shared the same father.
Oh and Casey is gay.
