Hunter was a time traveler from the future. He was going to help Carly time travel to a year where medical advances could save her unborn baby. The year was 2001. Even though the baby survived childbirth she still had health issues that prevented them from returning to 1970. Carly returned to 1970 long enough to tell Hunter and her sister what was happening and then wanted to return to 2001 to be with her baby. September 11, 2001.
The events of that morning through off her portal and she landed in 2013. Where she discovered that her daughter had been adopted and was living in New Jersey. Carly found her daughter, became a family friend and then by fluke discovered that Joe had not died in Vietnam. He had been a Prisoner of War. She made the decision to leave 2013 and her daughter to return to Joe.
The epilogue was in the year 2022. An adult Johanna was walking on the beach in Nags Head looking for Carly.
