In an effort to get back at Adeline, Ruthie plotted with Adeline's stepson to create a "lost" piece of art. A horrible portrait that makes her look horrific. Ruthie participated because she needed the money from the sale of a "lost" piece of art to replace an expensive watch that she lost, and then to buy the house outright and not lose it to Mike and his wealthy new love.
Ruthie ended up coming to her senses, she found the lost watch and gave Mike and Adeline her blessing. But not before Lucas slept with her fifteen-year-old daughter.
Ruthie ended up taking Jem and moving to NYC. The very end of the book takes Ruthie back to Orient where she makes amends for bad behavior and you believe (but don't know for sure) that she ends up back there as a full-time resident.
