Ellen was really Layla. The real Ellen died many years ago and their father threw her body in the bog.
Layla had a bit of a mental break "playing" Ellen for so long. When Finn finally figured it out he tracked her down and pushed her in anger. He pushed her and she fell and hit her head, killing her.
Oh, the reason Layla "disappeared" all those years ago? It was because Finn was abusive when he found out that Layla slept with another man and Layla was afraid for her life.
