The therapist had been hypnotizing or brainwashing the husbands of Dynasty Ranch. Including Hayden. They killed Richard and eventually Penny because they were pushing back against the "Stepford Wife" approach to the neighborhood. Penny left Nora the "smoking gun" that would have destroyed the entire neighborhood. Nora burned it, rather than turning it over to authorities.
Nora and Hayden bought a house in another neighborhood. After a night out with her friends, Hayden's lack of support frustrated Nora and she reverted him back to the hypnotized state.
