Owen was really Ethan. He ran after The Shop was busted because he knew it was likely they would reveal his true identity and it would put Bailey and himself in danger.
Bailey's mother was the daughter of a mob lawyer. When Bailey's mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident Ethan assumed it was connected to her father. Out of grief and anger, Ethan hacked some program and turned state's witness, sending his father-in-law to prison. Ethan and his daughter have been on the run ever since.
Hannah made a deal with the mob lawyer, allowing him access to Bailey and keeping her safe. In exchange, she knew she would never have Owen in their lives again.
The book ended with him making an undercover, yet brief, appearance at her gallery opening.
