It turns out that Cassandra and Jane were the younger sisters of Valerie.
James, the rapist, was their stepbrother from long ago. The stepbrother who had tormented them as kids and he attacked Valerie.
Amanda killed herself because with the encouragement of Cassandra and James, she had killed James and she felt incredible guilt over it. She had even called the police before going into the subway.
Shay was being groomed by them to take the fall for James' death since Amanda ruined their plans by dying in the subway.
Shay ended up killing Valerie in the subway, but it looked like self-defense.
The book ended with Shay alluding to the fact that Cassandra and Jane needed to be "punished" as well. Does that mean she will kill them, too?
