First of all, Ben wasn't leaving Olivia at the altar. They had gotten married at the courthouse. They were just doing the wedding to appease Olivia's mother. But Olivia's mother didn't know this and confronted Ben, who fell and hit his head, killing him.
Jason, one of Ben's frat brothers came upon the scene. He was afraid that he would be blamed because Ben had just fired him. So he had Matt help him move the body to the pool. Then Jason killed Matt to cover it up.
