Samantha Downing is a genius.
The Morgan children's grandfather did not have permission to take the kids on the road trip. Their parents hired a Private Investigator (the guy in maroon Honda) to make sure they were safe.
On the first road trip, Eddie killed Calvin, the PI hired by their parents. They torched him and the car and buried the remains in the Nevada desert. Portia and Beth knew about this.
Eddie also killed Nikki and left her body in the lake. Portia and Beth did not know about this. They thought she ran away.
Their mother killed their father when he wanted to stop looking for Nikki.
Beth killed Felix and unbeknownst to her, she left his body in the same lake as Nikki.
Krista, Eddie's new wife. Krista was the one messing with the ashes and playing the music. Krista killed the goons after Eddie for money. Krista also killed Eddie. And then Portia. And the book ended when she also killed Beth.
Everybody died. Except for Krista. As the sole living beneficiary, Krista inherits it all.
