SPOILERS for SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Picoult
It was revealed that Brit's absent mother was black. Brit's father was so upset by what happened in their relationship that he joined the "movement". When it is revealed to Brit that her mother was black she went off the deep end, killed herself, and Turk left the movement. It changed his world to realize that his precious baby boy was partly black.
Ruth is acquitted of murder after it was discovered the child had a medical condition that proved to be fatal. She goes on to open her own clinic, where years down the road she encounters Turk again and his child with his new wife. Neither of them acknowledge the past and behave in a normal patient/doctor kind of way.

Jodi Picoult wrote this for privileged whites so we can understand the difference between equality and equity. "Ruth" shows us that conversations between us and POC are almost impossible to have because we don't speak the same language. We should be grateful to Jodi for giving us a vocabulary and a new grammar.
ReplyDeleteI forgot Brit had killed herself and about the medical condition. I still found it unrealistic that Turk seemed to do a complete 180, but Jodi Picoult always has a major twist at the end. Thanks for this site!
ReplyDeleteIt was implied that Ruth was married at the end. Who did she marry?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure she did marry or just took the name Walker when she bought the clinic she now works at (Walker Clinic)???? I can see why she would want to change her name. I'm not sure either.
ReplyDeleteTurk saw that Ruth was wearing a ring,I think Ruth remarried.
ReplyDeletei just wish we could know if ruth knew it was turk with his daughter
